Richland-based SSC North America announced that the company’s newest car, the Tautara, broke the world speed record on October 10th when British race car driver, Oliver Webb, drove the super car an average of 316 mph on a seven-mile stretch of a remote Nevada highway. Richland native Jerod Shelby and his 24-employee company now produce the world’s fastest production cars in the world according to Guinness World Records.
The company had just moved into their new manufacturing facility in Richland and delivered their first car to a customer when COVID-19 hit.
SSC initially announced the Tuatara, it’s second model, in 2011 and started production in 2019. It comes with a $1.9 million price tag and only a dozen or so are expected to be produced this year.
