A recently published study by PNNL’s Electricity Infrastructure group states that cities and public utilities need to change how they manage their electric infrastructure due to increasing numbers of electric vehicles on the road. By 2028, it’s expected that 24 million electric vehicles will be operational. However, one fast-charging electric vehicle can draw as much electricity from the local grid as 50 homes. When demand soars, voltage plummets. Cities and utilities need to start implementing new strategies, such as preventing electric vehicles from charging during peak hours in the morning and early evening.
